Writing a Resume Objective

If you decided to include an “Objective” or “Professional Objective” section in your resume, here are a few tips for writing a good one.

First, the objective statement usually goes in the top section of the resume — right after your contact information.

The objective statement should give the reader (your potential new employer!) a clear idea of the type of position you are looking for. It should also quickly and clearly summarize the key skills you have for that specific position. Make sure you rewrite the objective for each and every job you apply for so it is tailored for each specific position!

Also, make sure that the rest of your resume backs up what you’ve said in your objective. If you say your objective is to “Become the President of NBC Programming” — you’re resume better back up that objective!

The objective section of your resume must be short, sweet, and specific. Here’s an example:

Objective:

A marketing position with Tech Co Systems that will leverage my experience in executing large technology-driven advertising campaigns.

Here’s another example:

Professional Objective:

To grow the market share of BigCorp in a position on the sales force by strengthening relationships with existing customers and using my strong networking skills to win new customers.

Here’s another example of a resume objective:

Objective:
A position in the Wasilia School District guidance program that uses my counseling, communication, and management skills in individual, group, or district settings.

And here’s another one:

Professional Objective:
A position in a leading Information Technology group that allows me to use my skills as a reliable troubleshooter with great attention to detail.

When you write your resume objective, make sure to use some “trigger” words about your personality traits. Here are some examples:
